March 2009
See New Possibilities for Your Garden
This Spring
March is an ideal time to find new ways to enhance the garden. The nurseries will soon be brimming with beautiful plants and trees in full spring bloom, making this the perfect time to stroll through and get fresh ideas for your home landscape.
If you’ve completed the winter cleanup, then March is a terrific time to see spaces that may need to be filled in with new plants. With current plantings still dormant and trimmed, the timing is perfect for envisioning new possibilities.
Vegetable gardens can be wonderful additions to a healthy lifestyle. Tending and enjoying your own organically grown fruits and vegetables provides outdoor activity and healthful foods the whole family will savor. Nothing can compare to the flavor of homegrown vegetables. Even finicky kids get excited to try new foods they’ve grown themselves!
Design possibilities for vegetable gardens can run the gamut from convenient raised beds and low-maintenance options to truly integrated edible landscapes that beautifully use the colors, shapes and textures of food plants in fun and interesting ways.

March is also the perfect time to choose flowering plants and trees. Consider lining an inviting entryway with pretty flowering shrubs. Azaleas and camellias are still in bloom, and wonderful flowering plum trees, crabapples and magnolias can be seen at their best right now.
For a one-stop shot of spring garden inspiration, be sure to stop by our Geared for Growing demonstration garden. Remember, if you sign up for a design during March, we’ll give you one free hour of design time, with our thanks.
