A Geared for Growing Award-Winning Garden Makeover

Geared for Growing received the California Landscape Contractors Association 2009 first place award in the small residential category for a landscape makeover of the Sanders residence that includes this beautiful street view transformation. The Sanders project incorporates well-designed stonework with plantings that provide multi-season colors and textures that complement the architectural elements of the house and create a dramatic first impression at any time of year.

Fall –The Perfect Time to Plan and Plant

Now is the best time to plan for fall color in the garden. Choosing plants while you can see them in their full fall splendor will help you envision where they can best fit into your landscape plan to provide enjoyment in the fall garden for many years to come. Planting now allows new additions to develop roots in time to take advantage of winter rains, which will help plants become established with less watering on your part. Late September and early October also are ideal for planting annuals that add color during fall.

Photo of Fall planting and erosion controlA professional design consultation may be just what’s needed to creatively fill in blank spots or finally finish a side yard or entry with plantings that will be beautiful and can help save water for next year. It’s time to consider evaluating and fixing any known drainage issues before they can cause problems in winter. This time of year also is ideal for establishing erosion control. Plants on a slope can get a solid start with the help of weed fabrics such as jute netting that absorbs and retains four to five times its weight in water and fully biodegrades in two to three years. Recycled redwood mulch products like Gorilla Hair™ added around trees, shrubs, and annuals and used in planters will reduce weeds, retain water and give a pleasing, long-lasting, low-maintenance finish to your landscape that also prevents erosion from winter rains. Seeding can be another great way to handle erosion control or to do just for the fun of enjoying a mass of wildflowers next spring.
